Celebrating Chiropractic Founders Day: A Glimpse into the Birth of Chiropractic Care

Sep 18, 2023 | ANJC News & Updates

Hello to our valued ANJC community!

Today marks a special day for all of us in the chiropractic field, especially for practitioners in New Jersey. As we celebrate Chiropractic Founders Day, we recognize the rich history that has shaped our profession and how New Jersey played a pivotal role in that story.

The Birth of Chiropractic Care

On September 18, 1895, Davenport, Iowa, witnessed an event that would forever change the landscape of holistic health.

Daniel David Palmer performed the first chiropractic adjustment on Harvey Lillard. Following an adjustment of a misplaced vertebra, Lillard’s long-standing hearing issues remarkably improved, marking the birth of chiropractic care.

Chiropractic in New Jersey: A Journey of Resilience

However, the early years of chiropractic were challenging for practitioners, especially in New Jersey.

In the 1920s, chiropractors in the state faced challenges, including being jailed for practicing without a license—despite the impossibility of obtaining one. Discriminatory practices continued until 1953, when chiropractors in New Jersey were finally permitted to apply for licensure.

As the demand for drug-free healthcare options grew, so did the chiropractic profession in the state.

By 2004, the Association of New Jersey Chiropractors (ANJC) organized, representing over 2,000 member doctors dedicated to delivering superior care to New Jersey residents. The ANJC continues to work diligently, striving to update practices and advocate for the chiropractic profession at the legislative level.

Growth, Evolution, and the ANJC’s Dedication

Chiropractic care’s fundamental tenet has always been that spinal adjustments can clear nerve interference, facilitating the body’s natural healing process. As the discipline evolved, so did its methodologies, including an approach to health that brought together holistic elements of nutrition, exercise, and overall wellness.

With the establishment of the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1897 by B.J. Palmer, chiropractic care’s significance in the medical arena was solidified.

Today, millions benefit from chiropractic adjustments globally.

Here at the ANJC, we’re honored to be part of this impressive legacy and are dedicated to upholding the highest standards of chiropractic care, from integrity and ethics to the ongoing education of our members.

Commemorating the Impact of Chiropractic

As we observe Chiropractic Founders Day, we’re served a reminder of a single adjustment’s profound influence. Our gratitude goes out to Daniel David Palmer for spearheading a movement that continues to enhance lives daily.

Thank you for being an integral part of our community! Here’s to the past, present, and future of chiropractic care in New Jersey and beyond.
